The future of shopping is here!

From augmented reality to 3D body scanning, here’s a preview of your shopping future…

This week I was scanned, measured and immersed in augmented (computer-generated) reality, all in the name of exploring the latest in fashion technology and how it has the potential to transform the way you shop for clothes.

"Guys, imagine taking your lady out shopping and actually enjoying it. And ladies, what would you do to get rid of the queues for thechanging rooms and optimise your shopping time…”

This is the message we heard from Manchester Arndale and Manchester Trafford Centre this week, and whilst it might seem far removed from the current reality of shopping, it’s clear this is just the beginning.

First up is the UK’s first “Magic Mirror” which was unveiled at Manchester’s Trafford Centre this week.

The Mirror is actually a giant computer screen that uses adapted X-Box technology with built in movement sensors to enable shoppers to see a real-time image of themselves with digital outfits superimposed onto their bodies – imagine a 3D version of those cut-out paper dolls with interchangeable outfits and you get the idea!

Standing in front of the camera, the shopper interacts with the scanner using hand gestures to try on clothes. In this instance the Mirror launched with party dresses, perfect for the Christmas season. The dress is overlayed on your image so you can see how it looks.

There is the option to adjust the size and positioning, and you can even snap a picture to save and share via Facebook. I had great fun trying on a huge range of dresses in different styles and colours, and even found a cute one-shoulder number that I would never normally have considered.

The Mirror was installed for a VIP Christmas shopping event and is not currently a permanent fixture, but it will be back at the Trafford Centre before Christmas and we urge you to visit the centre and have a go.

Next is Manchester Arndale’s revolutionary 3D Body Scanner, which formx the centerpiece of the ‘Get the Party Started’ event being held this weekend.

The scanner first appeared in June 2011 for a special ‘Denim Surgery’ helping shoppers find the perfect pair of jeans. Now, back by popular demand, shoppers can use this high-tech approach to help them find that all-important party dress.

I popped in to get a sneak preview and have a personal consultation with resident style adviser for the Arndale, Debs Hatfield.

The 3D body scanner uses state-of-the-art technology to get an instant body shape analysis with hundreds of accurate measurements taken in seconds. Impressive (if a little scary)! The scanning process is a simple one. You’re asked to come prepared by wearing white or light coloured underwear – I helpfully wore red but the team was on hand with a white vest top and leggings for me to change into.

Once I had emerged from the scanning booth (designed with privacy in mind) clutching my personalized print-out, Debs talked me through the results, which showed my body shape to be a triangle. She said: “It’s important to have a clear understanding of what your body type actually is and this in itself is no easy task since a lot of us aren’t a clear-cut body type, but often a mixture of two or more.” Debs thought I was more of a borderline triangle-hourglass.

Debs was ready with a selection of dresses suitable for my newly discovered body shape and there was also a make-up team from Boots No.7 and hairstylists from Trade Secret Hair Salon on hand to perfect the overall look.

The verdict? Of course, these techniques could never replace the experience of picking clothes up, feeling the material and seeing how an item flows on the body. But as a fashion snap-shop they can work wonders for people who either want choice but don’t necessarily have the time to see it all, or those who would like to better understand their body shape and find out exactly what style flatters your figure.

So, have a go… experience the future of shopping!
